Involvement of the mesolimbic system in palatability-induced ingestion.

چکیده
The pleasantness of taste powerfully influences the preference for food and fluids. Particularly palatable tastes can lead to considerable overconsumption. Because palatable foods and fluids are potentially nutritive, animals are highly motivated to ingest them. The brain regions along the taste pathway and its anatomical interfacing with the brain reward system are thought to be involved in palatabilitydependent consumption (Kelley et al., 2002). However, the role of the mesolimbic system in the behavioral expression induced by taste pleasantness is still unclear. Our previous studies (Shimura et al., 2002) demonstrated that lesions of the ventral tegmental area (VTA), the origin of the mesolimbic dopamine system, selectively affected the consumption of highly palatable solutions in rats. To obtain further information concerning the mechanisms of the reward system for palatability-driven ingestion, we recorded single neuron activities from the mesolimbic system during the licking of water and taste solutions in freely behaving rats.

The Involvement of Intra-Hippocampal Dopamine Receptors in the Conditioned Place Preference Induced By Orexin Administration into the Rat Ventral Tegmental Area
The activity of dopamine (DA)-containing neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a key mechanism in mesolimbic reward processing that has modulatory effects on different diencephalic structures like hippocampus (HIP), and receives inhibitory feedback and excitatory feed forward control. In addition, within the hippocampus, DA receptors are mostly located in the dorsal part (CA1) and dopa...

متن کاملInvolvement of GABAergic System in Increased Pentylenetetrazole-Induced Seizure Threshold in Cholestatic Mice
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important inhibitory transmitter in central nervous system and is involved in pathophysiology of epilepsy. Pentylenete-trazole (PTZ), a convulsant agent, partly acts via anion channel of GABAA receptor. Ivermectin, an antiparasitic agent and a GABAA agonist, has anticonvulsant effect in animal seizure models. Cholestasis increases ...
متن کاملInvolvement of Endogenous Opioidergic System in Effects of Food Deprivation on Formalin-Induced Nociceptive Behaviors in Rats
Background and Aims: It is well-recognized that endogenous opioidergic system plays an important role in pain sensitivity, pain perception, and response to some stressing situations. The present study examined the probable role of endogenous opioidergic system in effects of food deprivation on formalin-induced nociceptive behaviors in male and female rats. Methods: To make short-term food d...
متن کاملCentral insulin modulates food valuation via mesolimbic pathways
Central insulin is thought to act at the neural interface between metabolic and hedonic drives to eat. Here, using pharmacological fMRI, we show that intranasal insulin (INI) changes the value of food cues through modulation of mesolimbic pathways. Overnight fasted participants rated the palatability of food pictures and attractiveness of non-food items (control) after receiving INI or placebo....
